New Export Legislation for Organic Produce

New Export Legislation for Organic Produce

As an outcome from a review of Australia’s export legislation in 2015, the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment (DAWE) have published the Consultation Draft Export Control (Organic Goods) Rules 2020.

The new Organic Rules will set out the operational requirements that must be met to export organic goods from Australia. The Rules will replace the old Export Control Orders, and will be enforceable under the new Export Control Act (2020) – also currently in draft form.

DAWE are seeking comment from industry on this new Draft.

Submissions can be made via their online submission platform, here: https://haveyoursay.agriculture.gov.au/draft-export-organic-goods-rules-2020

The deadline for submissions is 7th August 2020.

Australian Organic Ltd is currently reviewing the Draft, and discussing potential implications of the new Rules with relevant industry stakeholders. We have requested a teleconference with DAWE, and will be making a submission on behalf of industry in the coming weeks.

If you wish to discuss the Draft and how it might affect your business, please feel free to contact our office, and ask to speak with our Chief Technical Officer, Owen Gwilliam.

It is expected the new Rules will come into force during 2021.
