When…did you become certified?

We became Australian Certified Organic in 2015.

Why…did you become certified?

Certification in the organic industry is paramount to ensure environmental and humanitarian standards are high. It enables legitimate ‘organic’ claims to be made on final products. So strict certification ensures Bhumi products are made (from harvest to shelf to skin) without the use of any harmful chemicals, allergens, insecticides, pesticides, toxic dyes, bleaches or finishes, does not use genetically modified seeds and uses less water than regular cotton. Overall, this results in having the lowest environmental impact, a deep sense of social justice with fair trade practices and also the purest and softest cotton, that is resilient and gentle on the skin.

What is your organic story?

My life before Bhumi was in International Public Health and it was here that I saw first hand the disastrous health and environmental impacts of traditional cotton growing with farmer suicides, child labour, pesticide poisoning, birth defects, harmful dyes and toxic water ways. I saw and knew too much about the truth behind the textile industry, things we don’t see and hear every day so after some years in the field meeting with amazing NGOs, grassroots organizations and a growing movement of organic farmers, it was time for positive change and I combined my love for the Earth, humanity and sustainable design to create Bhumi Organic Cotton.

What do you love most about your business?

I love having a dialogue with people about certification. I love talking to customers about the differences between certified and conventional cotton. People care when they know the facts.

And….any good stories to share?

I recently did a talk at a kindergarten about what is the Bud Logo and what is certified organic cotton. I loved the little sea of hands that went up when I asked whether students had seen the Bud logo and the response was wonderful with answers varying from their pasta, to weetbix to yoghurt. It was so heart-warming as young people are the key to the future and seeing how much they already knew about the logo was simply wonderful.
