Organic: Holistic and healthy

As we enter the final week of Australian Organic Awareness Month, let’s focus on one simple action you can take to be more healthy.

FIVELook for the Australian Certified Organic logo, affectionately known as the Bud logo when you’re out shopping.

We do the leg work of ensuring every brand that carries that logo has met one the strictest organic certification regimes in the world.  It’s your guarantee that what you’re consuming will be free of the harmful synthetic chemicals that are widely used in conventional production: endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, asthma triggers, skin irritants and more.

If you’re still in doubt, let’s have a look at the key reasons why going organic is a holistic and healthy lifestyle to embrace.

You’ll eat real food again.

Certified organic food is made without artificial colourings, preservatives or genetically modified ingredients. It’s food the way our grandparents ate. Food the way we’ve always eaten until very recently. Be eating this way, you spare your body from being bombarded by a steady and unfamiliar stream of chemicals and the risk that it makes a mistake in processing these toxins.

It’s not good enough to label a processed product as organic just because the primary ingredient is certified organic. Certified organic food and drink must contain a minimum of 95 per cent certified organic ingredients. Recipe ingredients are assessed to make sure everything that goes into a certified product is organic or safe to consume.

Strict guidelines are enforced in the production, transportation, processing and manufacturing processes to prevent contamination from conventional food.

You’ll nourish your skin with natural ingredients.

As the largest organ in your body, your skin is a gateway for synthetic chemicals. Many of these chemicals, which enhance the shelf life, fragrance, colour or consistency of conventional cosmetics have harmful effects in the body as they accumulate in fatty tissues.

By using certified organic cosmetics you close off this chemical pathway and nourish skin using natural ingredients.

Many conventional products such as clothing are still plagued by problems such as child labour and dangerous factory conditions.

Certified organic producers are required to provide healthy and fair working conditions and pay to their employees.  And there’s of course no tolerance for child labour.

You’ll support animal welfare and the environment.

Organically reared animals must be free range and allowed to perform their natural social and physical activities. This means no caged chickens and no sow stalls. Animals must be given a quality of life that allows them to perform natural social and physical functions. Additionally, stocking rates for organic animals are much lower than conventional standards and take into account the condition of the land. For set stocking no more than 1500 birds per hectare is permitted.

And, there is no live export.

Organic production also supports the environment, by focusing on improving the fertility of the soil, protecting biodiversity and protecting the health of local waterways.

But do I need to look out for the bud logo when I can just look for the word organic?

Unfortunately, the word organic is now a marketing buzzword – one that can be attached to almost any product, even ones that are riddled with harmful synthetic chemical additives.

By choosing a product that is certified organic, you’re getting past the spin and choosing a product that has had to meet very strict organic production standards.

Much like exercising, or eating a balanced diet, buying certified organic can play an important role in your health and wellbeing.

Not only that, it also helps the animals, workers and environment that produce the items you consume.
