Therese and Costa hit the road with Australian Organic’s Joanne Barber and Rochelle Crowe to visit students at Melbourne’s Melba College and Ballarat’s Delacombe Primary School – winners of an Australian Organic Schools competition in 2013. Prizes included a cooking demonstration, a garden and canteen consultation plus an assortment of Australian Certified Organic gardening products.
It was fantastic seeing Therese cooking with certified organic ingredients such as coconut oil by Absolute Organic and Tamari Soy Sauce by Pureharvest. When she asked the kids if they like brussels sprouts, they responded with a collective “yes” and thumbs up.
Therese says, “Thanks to activities in the kitchen, they learn to cook and appreciate food, which builds a solid foundation for a long-term healthy relationship with food.”
While Therese was in the kitchen, Costa was braving the cold in the sustainable garden with the kids.
“Both schools are leading the way in health and wellness for our kids,” says Therese. “The kids learn to plant seeds and identify herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables. They get to work in the garden and understand how important nutrition is for their little bodies by watching their food grow from seedlings to become final produce on their plates.”
Australian Organic has partnered with specialist education group Kids Media to develop a bigger and better Australian Organic Schools program. The program helps schools learn about growing and eating healthy food.
Costa says, “This is where it is at. Education is key to a sustainable future. It’s about providing them with green thumb skills to share with their families and friends.”
Joanne says, “Watching the kids be inspired and empowered by organic food and gardening is really what it’s all about.
“We all walked away from this great day knowing we had left not only smiles on the kids faces, but also with new knowledge thanks to Therese and Costa’s involvement.”
The Australian Organic program is freely available to all schools, and sponsors Sunraysia, Eco Alkalines and five:am make it possible. Parents at Delacombe Primary School say this visit provided them with the validation that their efforts are recognised and making a difference for their kids’ futures.
Australian Organic goodwill ambassadors Therese Kerr, Pete Evans and Costa Georgiadis donate their time to the schools program. They continue to promote their passion for organics and they believe education to improve the health and wellbeing of children is an important message to share.
Therese says, “This is the grass roots stuff and where we, as a society, need to focus our attention.”

Australian Organic Schools program is bigger and better!
The launch of the new Australian Organic Schools website is another exciting step forward for teachers, students, canteens and parents and carers.
The site highlights the benefits of eating organic food and using Australian Certified Organic products. Developed by education communication specialists Kids Media, it engages teachers, students, canteen staff, and parents and carers. It’s structured for intuitive navigation, making it easy for each target audience to quickly find relevant information.
For primary and middle students (8–14 years), it’s all about educational fun. For their teachers, the website delivers curriculum-appropriate resource material designed to encourage the creation of organic school gardens and make teaching about growing organic food easy.
Parents and carers are informed about what’s happening with the Australian Organic Schools program, and canteen managers and volunteers are invited to participate by including healthy organic food (ideally grown in the school garden) and Australian Certified Organic products on their menus.
