AOL’s position on South Australia’s GMO moratorium decision

In August, we were made aware of, and dismayed with, the South Australian government’s decision to lift their state-wide GMO moratorium on organic crops. We are also aware that there exists an opportunity for individual shire councils to apply to their state government to have regional moratoria upheld.

We believe that the benefits for the South Australian region remaining GMO crop free would outweigh any benefits from lifting the moratorium, and we would like to support any South Australian producers in their efforts to maintain regional exclusion of GMO crops.

We have provided members with online resources including AOL’s statement on the decision, and a letter template to contact individual shire councils to apply to their state government to have regional moratoria upheld. Members can find these resources online in the member portal.

Please be aware, that while the state government deadline for submissions is 30th September 2020, your local council may implement an earlier deadline to allow them to consider your application prior to the state government submission cut off date.

For further details of the opportunity, please visit the SA Primary Industries website: https://www.pir.sa.gov.au/primary_industry/genetically_modified_gm_crops

Should you proceed with petitioning your local council to have your region remain GMO crop free, we invite you to contact our office if we may be of further assistance
